Aware Inc. recently won a contract to supply the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) with biometric fingerprint scanners to help the agency conduct employee background checks.

Under the contract, Aware will provide its Biometric Services Platform (BioSP) system, a commercial off the shelf system, as well as the necessary installation, training, and maintenance support.

BioSP will enable TSA to scan its employees’ fingerprints and submit them to the FBI in EFTS format, the standard which the FBI uses for all fingerprint submissions.

The system is designed to assist employees with required workflows and functions needed to conduct the background check process including acceptance of records in EFTS format, validation of compliance records, receipt and proper distribution of FBI responses, and temporary storage of records during the background check process.

BioSP is well-suited for this project, not only because it is truly a COTS product, but also because of its rich user interface, easy-to-configure workflows and advanced fingerprint processing capabilities,” said Rob Mungovan, the vice president of Aware. “We are pleased to be expanding our relationship with TSA and to have the opportunity to deploy BioSP at another U.S. federal government agency.”

Aware is based in Bedford, Massachusetts and specializes in biometric fingerprint enrollment systems as well as border control and secure credential applications.
