Clients keep buying L-1’s HIIDE device; company on a spree of biometric contracts

The last twelve months have been good to L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: ID). In October 2008 L-1 won a contract potentially worth $250 million from the State of New York for more than 75 facilities for fingerprinting, background checks, and other data required for applications to certain jobs and state licenses; it has won several other contracts since.

  • L-1’s HIIDE is a rugged hand-held biometric enrollment and recognition device providing real-time identification using iris, finger, and face biometrics. More than 10,000 devices are currently fielded into areas of conflict around the world. Back in March, L-1, HIIDE manufacturer, won an $8.3 million U.S. Army contract for HIIDE 4.0 (9 March 2009 HSNW).
  • In August 2009 the company said it had received new orders totaling $9.6 million for its HIIDE and PIER mobile biometric recognition systems as part of existing customer agreements. Two thirds of the HIIDE order and all of the PIERs are expected to ship in the third quarter. The remaining HIIDEs will be shipped in Q4 2009. The order was received by the Biometrics Division of L-1 (18 August 2009 HSNW).
  • Also in August, L-1 brought in a five-year, $62.8 million contract from the California Department of Motor Vehicles for technology systems to create secure driver’s licenses. The deal could be worth a total of $108.6 million to Stamford, Conn.-based L-1 if California elects to exercise a pair of two-year extensions.

Now L-1 reports it has landed $6.2 million for mobile biometric recognition devices from an unidentified customer. Under the contract, Stamford, Connecticut-based L-1’s biometrics division will provide its Hand-held Interagency Identity Detection Equipment (HIIDE) to an unnamed client who plans to use the devices in areas of conflict. Half of the order will ship in the fourth quarter, and the remaining units will ship in the first half of 2010, according to L-1.

L-1 reported a 2008 net income of $12.3 million on revenue of $562.9 million.
