French nuclear physicist faces terrorism charges

Published 16 March 2012

Even defenders of Adlene Hicheura a 35-year-old French physicist from Switzerland’s CERN nuclear lab, admit that he spoke his mind — but they insist it was talk, not action, and that the authorities are exaggerating the danger he represents. They complain he has been wrongly jailed for 2.5 years awaiting trial on trumped-up terrorism charges. The Swiss authorities accuse him of communicating with al Qaeda’s North Africa branch to plot terrorist attacks. He will be going to trial in two weeks.
