Boston police earlier this morning shot and killed one of the suspects in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.

The shooting took place in Watertown, a suburb of Boston.

The police says that suspect no. 1 – the one seen wearing a dark baseball cap in the images the FBI releases Thursday afternoon – was apparently killed by an explosive device he was carrying on him or with him. The explosives went off after an exchange of heavy fire with the police.

The suspect has been identified as an Islamic militant from Chechnya, who immigrated to the United States legally.

The two bombers are brothers  in their early 20s.

Chechnya has been a breeding ground for Islamic terrorists for two decades now, and in addition to many acts of terorism inside Russia, Chechen Islamists have been present in Afghanistan, Iraq, and, now, Syria.

The police shut down Watertown. All road traffic in and out of Watertown was halted, and no vehicles are allowed on the streets of Watertown. Public transportation has been suspended. People were asked to stay in their homes. Schools and businesses will not open this morning.

Similar measures were announced for Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods.

The police instructed residents not to open their doors to anyone unless they know him or her.

All schools will remain closed in the greater Boston area, businesses were asked not to open, and public transportation was halted.

Thousands of police officers, National Guardsmen, and federal agents are in and around Watertown. Helicopter are hovering over head.

The noose began to tighten around the two suspects yesterday afternoon, when the FBI releases images of the two suspects.

Around 10:30 p.m., the two suspects confronted and shot an MIT security officer.

The two then robbed a convenience store and carjacked a man who later escaped.

The Boston police identified the carjacked SUV, and a heavy fire was exchanged between the two bombers inside and the surrounding police officers as the police was chasing the SUV from Cambridge to Watertown. During the shooting, and while driving, the suspects threw out several explosive devices out of the SUV’s windows.

The police says that during the hot pursuit, a MBTA transit police officer was seriously injured.

The police believes that the remaining terrorist may be wearing a suicide bomb on his body.
