Dayton's new UAV center receives initial funding

UAVs are becoming more and more ubiquitous in military and homeland security missions; Dayton, Ohio — a neighbor to Wright-Patterson Air Force base — wants to capitalize on the UAV trend, and it opens a new UAV technology center

Riding the wave — the UAV wave, that is. Dayton, Ohio, is becoming a center for UAV development — the state of Ohio has just gifted the city $500,000 for a UAV technology center for application to UAVs and UAS craft.

The Center For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Exploitation received this grant from the Ohio Controlling Board, which will find civilian and military technology development. This project is also going to be supported to the tune of $2.5 million by the Ohio Third Frontier Commission, but those particular funds have not yet been released to the Center. The Center’s goal will be to work on drones and bring new capabilities to the aircraft as well as to see what can be done to reduce their size and costs.

Approximately fifty new jobs over the next five years will open up due to the Center’s work and the hunt is on for a Director as well as a variety of equipment. Dayton is the home of Wright-Patterson AFB which manages the U.S.A.F. UAV program and invests resources in UAV research as well as purchase the craft from providers.
