Disaster performance wins awards

Published 13 January 2006

Yes, virtue is its own reward, but it is good to know that there are other rewards as well

Now there is one more reason to have plans for disaster recovery — and implement them effectively: You can win an award. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) two days ago honored CenterPoint Energy (NYSE: CNP - News) electric transmission and distribution utility as a winner of two awards — the Emergency Response Award for its outstanding efforts to restore power in the wake of Hurricane Rita, which slammed into the company’s service territory on the morning of 24 September 2005, and the Emergency Assistance Award for its efforts to assist peer utilities Westar Energy, Alabama Power, Entergy, and Florida Power & Light recover from ice storms and hurricanes, including Hurricane Wilma, which struck late in the 2005 season.

EEI’s Emergency Response and Emergency Assistance awards are presented annually to both U.S. and foreign-based member companies to recognize superlative efforts in restoring electric service that has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges following a national and international nomination process.
