San Francisco-based Black Lotus, a DDoS protection specialist, last week announced the completion of its first institutional financing in the amount of $3.5 million. The round was led by San Francisco-based Industry Capital.

The company also announced the addition of Arman Khalili, the principal advisor at Industry Capital, to its board of directors. Khalili, a serial entrepreneur, was previously an operational advisor at Harbor Ridge Capital. Khalili was the founder of San Francisco’s largest managed colocation provider UnitedLayer, the first secured e-mail company NeXTLayer, and the first licensed music subscription company MusicBank.

Black Lotus said it will use the funding to facilitate the company’s continued growth in the information security sector, including strategic acquisitions and global expansion of the Black Lotus DDoS defense network. The strategic investment will fund entry into new markets, where Black Lotus will deploy additional capacity and improve quality of service through peering and closer proximity to global partner networks.

Black Lotus notes that it has established itself as the de facto service provider for data centers, telecommunications carriers, and hosting providers which require a holistic approach to DDoS attack defense and extended protection into their service portfolios.

“This funding marks a pivotal chapter in Black Lotus’ growth, and it will allow our company to establish a presence in new markets throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, enabling rapid deployment of DDoS mitigation IP infrastructure,” said Shawn Marck, founder of Black Lotus.

Arman Khalili said, “The company has a proven track record of successfully helping service providers, enterprises and end users against massive, complex DDoS attacks, and our partnership with the company is a smart investment. We have been impressed with the quality, expertise and dedication of the Black Lotus team, and we look forward to partnering with the company to expand and accelerate its growth.”
