Lockheed Martin, as part of its on-going support for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, will offer a lineup of hands-on, interactive science and technology attractions for student attendees at the upcoming USA Science & Engineering Festival, where the company will serve as founding and presenting host.

The company says that its exhibits at the Festival will give students a chance to experience:

  • What it is like to be a pilot: The F-35, F-22, and F-16 flight simulators will allow students to “take to the skies.”
  • What it is like to pilot a spacecraft: Visitors can rendezvous with an asteroid at the Orion Human Space Flight Simulator, where they will use actual flight controls to pilot the Orion Capsule.
  • What it is like to live on Mars: The Lockheed Martin Phoenix Mars Lander exhibit will feature the Mars One missions. Attendees will be able to take a photo of “living” on Mars and post it on social media.
  • What it is like to live in Antarctica: Students can wear cold weather gear and learn what it is like to live and work in the coldest place on earth.
  • Robot Rescue Challenge: Visitors can control a blimp through a challenging course to rescue a stranded team member and learn the different ways to control robots using state-of-the-art robotic technology.
  • Robots in a band: KMel Robotics created a team of precision-controlled, intricately coordinated flying vehicles that will be playing a variety of off-the-shelf and homemade instruments. The creators of these musical robots will be available to talk with students.
  • Interactive Weather Wall: Visitors can record their own weather segment with The Weather Channel and take home a DVD of their personalized recording.

Media Sneak Peek will be held Friday, 25 April 2014, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Festival will be open to the public Saturday-Sunday, 26-27 April, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

More than 500,000 people attended 2012 USA Science & Engineering Festival events. The three-day expo at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center draws students, parents, teachers, as well as organizations and companies interested in investing in STEM education.
