Next week, Illinois’s top cybersecurity talent, including veterans, will gather at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois, to participate in the annual U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) Cyber Camp. USCC notes that throughout the week-long camp, individuals will participate in a variety of classes that cover such subjects as packet crafting and pen testing, and compete in a virtual “Capture the Flag” competition to demonstrate their cybersecurity abilities in a free-form environment in hopes of winning one of the limited (ISC)2 scholarship vouchers.

“Our nation has a significant shortage of high level cybersecurity professionals,” stated national director for U.S. Cyber Challenge Karen S. Evans. “Through the use of classroom instruction, labs, and free-form competitions we develop the skills of our camp participants to help them progress in their cybersecurity career and reduce the vulnerabilities we see every day for businesses, governments and individuals.”

More than twenty individuals, including U.S. military veterans, will participate in this year’s Illinois USCC camp and competition. Attendees to the invitation-only camps were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through USCC in April which drew over 1,300 registrants from over 600 schools nationwide.

On Friday, camp participants will compete in a virtual Capture the Flag competition, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Fogelson Theater located on the campus of Moraine Valley Community College.

USCC notes that the camp is supported in part through sponsorships by (ISC)2 Foundation, iSight Partners, NIC, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM), Avue Technologies, SANS Institute, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Department of Homeland Security, the Federal CIO Council, Cyber Ninjas, VMD, Hewlett Packard, Workday, Amazon Web Services, Monster Government Solutions, Clifton Larson Allen, CenturyLink, and Accenture.
