CyberlifeTwitter goes down and believers in conspiracy theories pounce

Twitter service in Japan and parts of the United States was down earlier today (Monday), shortly after WikiLeaks claimed that its servers had been subjected to a cyberattack. When service was restored, some users were quick to see a conspiracy, linking the outages at WikiLeaks and Twitter to the WikiLeaks release of a new set of hacked e-mails from the Democrat National Committee. “.@Twitter was down ~ 25 min. #DDOS or US Govt? #DNCLeak2 intel docs reference killings of Vince Foster & Ron Brown,” said one tweet.

Twitter service in Japan and parts of the United States was down earlier today (Monday), shortly after WikiLeaks claimed that its servers had been subjected to a cyberattack. Mashable reports that a Twitter status monitor said the outage began at around 6.45am GMT and continued for around half an hour, but there were reports of different users experiences different downtime.

Reports of the outage peaked at almost 14,000, according to Downdetector.com, which also said that many users were still experiencing problems in Japan more than a couple of hours later.

Twitter is yet to comment on the loss of service.

The Twitter downtime followed shortly after WikiLeaks posted a message to its Facebook account in which it claimed that there was a DoS attack on WikiLeaks servers, which caused a brief outage.

In the post, WikiLeakes said: “We are still under a DoS attack on our e-mail publication servers and it appears that Twitter is down as well, we are unable to confirm if this is an attack on twitter at this time.”

After Twitter service was restored, some supporters of Donald Trump were quick to see a conspiracy, linking the outages at WikiLeaks and Twitter to the WikiLeaks release of a new set of hacked e-mails from the Democrat National Committee.
