The United States carried out a cyberattack against Iran after Iran attacked Saudi oil facilities in September. Reuters, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reports that the cyberattacks targeted physical hardware which Iran uses to spread propaganda.

The cyberattack took place in late September, in the fake of an Iranian drone and missile attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.

A spokeswoman for the Pentagon declined to comment, saying “as a matter of policy and for operational security, we do not discuss cyberspace operations.”

C|netreports that earlier this year, the United States launched a series of cyberstrikes which took down Iranian computer networks used to control missile launches. That earlier attack came after Iran shot down a U.S. surveillance drone it said was violating Iranian airspace. The United States also reportedly launched a cyberattack in June to destroy a database which has been used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to devise attacks against oil tankers in the Gulf.
