Best known for surveillance products, company hopes to leverage core strengths in the small and mid-sized airport market; flagship CloseView cameras automatically generate close-in views of faces and license plates whenever suspicious activity is detected

Memphis, Tennessee-based DynaPel, best known for its video surveillance products and systems, is now the latest to get into the aviation security business. The company announced this week that it will be adapting its CloseView brand cameras for use in tracking intruders and unauthorized traffic at small and mid-sized airports. CloseView cameras are specially designed to automatically generate close angle views whenever the system detects motion. At the same time, the software begins recording the video images on a DVR machine, thereby providing easy reference to the face or license plate of the car that triggered the alarm. Tereboro Airport in New Jersey is currently installing them as part of a large-scale renovation plan.

DynaPel has an interesting background. According to Max Gray, the company’s newly-hired head of its aviation division, the company fourteen years ago invented the algorithms behind the anti-jitter technology now in use in most video cameras. Sadly, however, the company was not able to secure an American patent (it did win a European one) and so executives turned their attention to the surveillance market. Until recently, most of its efforts were in protecting car dealer lots.
