Gemalto wins Polish e-passport contract

Deal follows similar arrangements made this summer with United States and Slovenia

Go west, young man (and make sure you have your e-passport with you.) Poland is a rising star in the European Union, and like other members of that organization it must comply with a 25 October deadline to begin issuing biometric e-passports. Only six countries are likely to make the deadline, owing in large part to technological hiccups, but the rest are moving forward at a steady pace. Last week Amsterdam, Holland-based Gemalto announced that it had been selected by the Polish government to provide the electronic inlays for the country’s e-passports. The contract follows a succesful test of Gemalto’s technology in a limited roll-out of diplomatic passports earlier this year.

Earlier this summer, Gemalto announced similar deals with the governmnts of the United States and Slovenia, and has supplied e-passport technologies to France, the Czech Republic, Norway, Russia, and Singapore.
