HSPD-12 interoperability and compliance coalition formed

Published 29 June 2006

We’re only a few months from the mandatory compliance date with the IT security standard; large IT security providers create an organization to promote HSPD-12 compliance and interoperability

Belcamp, Maryland-based IT security giant SafeNet (NASDAQ: SFNT) announced the formation of the HSPD-12 Interoperability Consortium. Some of the industry’s leading vendors are part of the initiative, which aims to provide an interoperable solution to government agencies and system integrators which addresses the challenges of complying with the White House-issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 12 — Policy for a Common Identification Standard for Federal Employees and Contractors.

The consortium aims to provide an industry perspective to government agencies and system integrators, offer an end-to-end interoperable HSPD-12 solution, build a testing lab to demonstrate the pre-configured and pre-tested solution, and ensure the solution is flexible to accommodate the future security needs of customers. The goal of the consortium is to ensure that all the components required to meet the mandate — smartcards, PKI, middleware, card credential management systems, biometrics, and a physical access system — do so.

The Founding Member companies are (in parentheses: their HSPD-12 compliant component):

SafeNet — smart card, authentication, and encryption solutions

Consul Risk Management — security audit and compliance

CoreStreet — integration and identity management software

Entrust — certificate authority, shared service provider, and encryption solutions

Forum Systems — secured systems architecture

Precise Biometrics — biometric solutions

Probaris Technologies — secured business process solutions

Intercede — smart card management

Omnikey — smart card readers

HSPD-12 was signed on 27 August 2004. The compliance deadline is 27 October 2006.
