In a move that could help bolster U.S. smart grids against cyberattacks, Sensus recently announced that it will incorporate IBM’s encryption and key management technologies into its smart grids.

Sensus, a manufacturer of smart grid infrastructure components, said that it will use IBM’s cyber security solutions in its FlexNet communications system for electric, gas, and water utility smart grid endpoints including meters and automated distribution devices.

More specifically, the company will use IBM’s Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager, software that centralizes and automates the encryption of key management processes across all networks. In addition, Sensus also purchased technology to encrypt its data.

Speaking on the announcement, Matt Zafuto, the vice president of strategic alliances at Sensus, said, “We have to look at security as a moving target. In the same way that we continually update a personal computer against new viruses, we have to be constantly vigilant of new threats against critical infrastructures, such as utility networks.”

“By combining the technological strengths of both Sensus and IBM, we can produce the level of security our customers require and help drive industry compliance with the most rigorous security standards and guidelines like the NIST IR 7628,” he added.

Meanwhile Doug Scheller, the head of Global IUN Smart Metering Solution Energy and Utilities Industry at IBM, said, “Energy and utility providers are continually looking for ways to better maintain the stability and security of their existing systems so they can better service customers and maintain operational efficiency,”

He went on to say, “By working with Sensus, we are able to introduce technologies such as encryption and key management into the smart grid market, to ensure the communication between smart meters and utilities is reliable, secure and uninterrupted.”
