Security agencies and shippers alike will be able to ascertain “absolute location identification” of tagged assets and personnel

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology insinuates itself into more and more areas of life and commerece — so much so, in fact, that we reported a couple of days ago that there are lingerings shortages of RFID-skilled technicians to install and maintain the technology. Now, Addison, Texas-based Identec Solutions has released its satellite-assisted GPS Tag which, the company says, can can isolate the specific location and movement of a tagged asset. The company further says that “Absolute location identification has not been previously possible,” but whether or not it was possible before, the ability to continuosly fix the location of a tracked asset as it moves would be of great help to both security agencies and commercial shippers.

The tag comes with built-in intelligence and has a read/write range of about 500 meters. The tag uses satellites in combination with RFID to chart its own route and movement.
