Phase II award to finance further development of LIBS spectrochemical hazard analysis technology; laser-based approach ideal for troops in the field; toxic substances a constant threat in Iraq

San Diego, California-based JMAR Technologies (NASDAQ: JMAR) has won a $711,00 Phase II award from the U.S. Army’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The award will help finance continued development of the company’s spectrochemical hazard analysis technology for use in man-portable and vehicle mounted systems. Based on the JMAR’s BriteLight laser technology, the new system is designed specifically for “adjustable, double-pulse mode operation to support laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).” According to the company, “LIBS techniques are well-suited to field analysis since only the laser beam must reach the sample, allowing safe, remote monitoring of hazardous materials situated in difficult to reach locations.” This is good news for troops in Iraq who, in addition to confronting the threat of roadside bombs, must also contend with polluted waste sites.
