Last Friday L-3 Security & Detection Systems (SDS) announced that it had acquired Detector Networks International (DNI) in a move that bolsters L-3’s portfolio of radiation detection technology.

DNI specializes in the development of radiation detectors for use in airports, seaports, border crossings, and other major transportation hubs. In particular its Radiation Detection Straddle Carrier (RDSC) has been implemented at ports to scan cargo containers by the U.S. government.
RDSC operates as a passive radiation detection system that fits with standard straddle carriers and can alert security personnel to the presence of nuclear materials without having to open cargo containers.
“We are pleased to announce the purchase of the Albuquerque, NM-based DNI,” said Thomas Ripp, the president of L-3 Security & Detection Systems. “With the DNI acquisition, L-3 now offers highly advanced radiation detection in a standalone application or as an integrated part of our cargo solutions.”
The acquisition provides L-3 SDS with a complete line of products to scan air and sea cargo for a variety of threats including radiological and explosives. Its portfolio includes the Clearview Workstation which integrates multiple scanning technologies including license plate readers, multiple x-ray scanners, and manifest data to detect a range of threats.
