RAE Systems introduces handheld radiation detectors

Cell phone-sized DoseRae suite provides a rugged alternative for both personal and professional use; units provide accurate dose readings with a resolution of less than 0.02 microSieverts; SAIC lends a hand

Personal radiation detectors are hot these days — no pun intended — and many companies are developing them for both personal and professional use. Obviously, the latter have to be more technically sophisticated and rugged, and that is exactly what RAE Systems has in mind with its recently introduced

DoseRAE and DoseRAE-P gamma radiation dosimeters. Marketed for first responders, nuclear power plants, research facilities, hospitals, and industrial locations using or producing radioactive gauges, the DoseRae suite provided a cell phone-sized way to ensure that employees do not exceed the standard exposure limit of fifty milliSieverts [sic] (the course of normal life exposes the individual to five miiiliSieverts per year). To ensure safety, the Geiger-Mueller tubes in both DoseRAE units provide accurate dose readings with a resolution of less than 0.02 microSieverts. The product was jointly developed with Science Applications International Corporation.
