RedXDefense signs an event-security deal with DHS

Kiosks arranged around event perimeter use trace explosives technology to screen ticketholders; those who pass are issued a “Keepsake” that acts as both souvenir and security authorization

The last we heard of Rockville, Maryland-based RedXDefense, the company had joined up with Smiths Detection to develop a turnstile-based explosives detection system. That work is still in progress, but RedXDefense can multitask. The company announced this week that it had signed a contract with DHS to develop a new method of detecting explosives at major events such as athletic contests and circuses. “We must offer sporting stadiums and theme parks security alternatives that successfully protect their facilities, guests, and employees without sacrificing their business objectives,” said Dr. Regina Dugan, RedX President & CEO.

Precious few details were released, but the system appears to involve a series of kiosks around the event perimeter at which event-goers will be stopped and screened use trace residue detection techniques. After passing the through the

XPro kiosks — which themselves are managed by RedEXPert, a decision support software that supports communication via email, cell phone, or Blackberry — individuals are issued a “Keepsake” [sic] which serves both as a security pass and a souvenir (costs are defrayed by advertising on the pass). This is a interesting approach, and we only wish we could provide more of the particulars. A call to the company was not returned.
