SafeNet releases new security processor

Published 18 November 2005

Two days ago we reported that cybersecurity behemoth SafeNet was acquiring Eracom, a company specializing in providing cryptographic and transaction security solutions to protect credit cards, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), and ATM transactions. SafeNet is doing things on the hardware side as well. Yesterday, the Yokohama, Japan-based SafeNet (NASDAQ: SFNT), released the SafeXcel-5160, a security processor adding a high-performance processor to the suite of Enterprise Security Processors designed for network equipment manufacturers targeting the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) market. The processor is primarily targeted at VPN gateway appliances with bandwidths of at least OC3/STM-1 rate. The SafeXcel-5160 integrates the 32-bit RISC processor with an inline security packet engine and flow processor. The SafeXcel-5160 achieves an impressive 310 Mbps IPsec throughput with 64 byte packets, and 600 Mbps IPsec throughput with average size and larger packets. SafeNet is already dominant in the financial services security market, and the SafeXcel-5160 will only strengthen its position. The SafeXcel-5160 is compatible with its predecessors, SafeNet’s SafeXcel-5140 and SafeXcel-5150 Enterprise Security Processors, thus providing OEMs with a trouble-free migration path in building higher performance appliances.

SafeXcel-5160 is pre-integrated with SafeNet’s QuickSec unified security software, allowing OEMs to build complete VPN gateways, broadband access devices, and home networking equipment with relatively short time-to-market.
