China approves law to hold suspects for 37 days without notice

On Wednesday China’s parliament approved of a new law that allows the government to legally hold suspects accused of terrorism, corruption, and endangering state security for up to thirty-seven days without alerting their families of where or why they are being held; the law codifies China’s practice of making suspects “disappear”; the law was originally proposed to allow the government to hold suspects for six months but was diluted to thirty-seven days
