Putin orders easing of restrictions on demonstrations in Sochi

Published 6 January 2014

Russian president Vladimir Putin has ordered the easing of curbs on demonstrations in the Winter Olympics venue of Sochi in an effort to present a more appealing image of Russia ahead of an event overshadowed by security and human rights worries. Putin, aware that the success or failure of the Games will help shape his legacy, has closely identified himself with the $50 billion project. He made a surprise inspection of venues in the Black Sea resort on Friday, and Russian state television showed him skiing down a slope in dark glasses and a helmet.
