As worries grow about smuggling nuclear materials into U.S. ports, DHS buys mobile high-energy X-ray system that can be driven from one port to another

The U.S. government has awarded Smiths Detection a $23 million contract to provide DHS with the company’s HCV Mobile II trucks. The HCVs are high-energy mobile cargo screening systems, and DHS will deploy them in several U.S. ports.”

The HCV Mobile II is a second-generation system that can be driven from one port to another at normal freeway speeds. The HCV Mobile II system generates high-energy X-rays that can penetrate more than 10.5 inches of steel. The high-resolution images of a container’s contents are enhanced through proprietary software. Systems can also be deployed with integrated radiation detection capability.
