Most states failing, according to new report

The Trust for America’s Health released a report titled “Ready or Not? Protecting the Public’s Health from Disease, Disasters, and Bioterrorism, 2005,” scoring the fifty states and the District of Columbia on ten indicators of bioterror readiness, and grading the federal government on its progress toward public health emergency preparedness since the 9-11 attacks.

In an assessment by twenty leading public health experts, the federal government received a D+ for its public health efforts. Fewer than half of the states had more than five of the ten possible indicators in place for emergency response. No state scored more than eight out of ten on the indicator checklist, and a handful of states had only two indicators adequately prepared.
