Defentect’s gamma radiation detection technology is used in a perimeter security system that can detect radiological materials

San Diego State University and Defentect announced the launch of their radiation detection perimeter system joint development project. Defentect has been working with DHS’s Immersive Visualization Center, known as the Viz Lab, at San Diego State University on a perimeter security technology to counter the threat of dirty bombs.

Defentect and Viz Lab officials unveiled a permanent, ongoing fixed radiation perimeter system installed at the entranceway to Viz Lab’s courtyard. The homeland security project, featuring Defentect’s gamma radiation detection technology, is designed to demonstrate in real time a perimeter security system that can detect radiological materials.

People can visit Viz Lab’s courtyard and experience the system firsthand,” Eric Frost, Viz Lab co-director, said in a statement. “This program is one more way the Viz Lab is working to evaluate and enhance tools and technologies to help both public and private entities deal with potential hazards with accuracy and speed — important in the face of mounting and unseen threats.”
