Home and business security systems grow in popularity

be color-coordinated to fit any decor, Fleming said.

Jennifer Domas, marketing consultant at Black Hills Security & Systems told Cook that costs increase as the system becomes more complicated, according to. Home systems will typically cost between $1 and $2 a square foot.

Systems with cellular capabilities are less vulnerable than systems that depend upon traditional landline telephones. Cellular systems also give business and homeowners more flexibility because they can remotely access their system.

Security companies that offer 24-hour monitoring of a security system do so for a monthly fee that ensures you that if an alarm is sounded, immediate measures will be taken to alert you and authorities. Monitoring can cost about $1 a day, Domas said.

Security system providers will also provide window decals and outdoor signs that warn would-be thieves that your property is protected.

Cook notes that interest in business and home security systems has increased in recent years. “It’s been steady and growing every year,” Domas said. When the economy gets bad, there tends to be an increase in internal thefts by employees and thefts through break-ins, she said.

Fleming said it is not uncommon for people to inquire about a security system after a burglary or after a neighbor is robbed. “It’s often after the fact, unfortunately, instead of as a preventative measure,” Fleming said.

Domas said a security system has other advantages; it can protect you from other hazards, including fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Protecting your assets by installing a security system is not only a good business practice, but it might save you money on your insurance, according to Rachel Mertes, an agent with Western Dakota Insurors. Insurance companies look at what efforts their customers make to keep their businesses secure.

The more loss-control people have in regards to security and a safe environment, the less they will pay for their insurance,” Mertes said. Mertes also recommends reviewing your insurance coverage regularly with your agent to protect yourself from a loss.

Having the right security system in place also helps police solve crimes, according to Sgt. Peter Ragnone of the Rapid City Police Department. “A business that has security measures in place is less likely to be victimized, and we have a better chance of solving the crime if there’s a good system in place,” Ragnone said.

Along with all of the gadgets and gizmos available to protect businesses and homes, there is an even cheaper way to protect homes and businesses, Ragnone said: The best security measure is alert citizens willing to report suspicious activity to the police,” he said.
