US-VISIT round-upCoast Guard to run illegal immigrants against US-VISIT database
Pilot program off Puerto Rico will take fingerprints and digital photographs of captured migrants as US-VISIT flexes its digital muscles; a good first step for DHS’s mobile biometrics plans
The US-VISIT program, the linch-pin of the United States’ effort to control legal immigration by subjecting visa applicants to a background check, began doing double duty this week. The Coast Guard has announced that it is now comparing digital photographs and fingerprints of illegal migrants against the US-VISIT database of wanted criminals and immigration violators. The pilot program is being tested in the Mona Passage, the body of water that separates the Domincan Republic from Puerto Rico, and is a good first step in achieving the Coast Guard and DHS’s long-stated objective to develop a mobile biometric system.
