DoD announces it will make HSPD-12 deadline with new "Super CAC" cards

New cards will be issued over the next three years as older cards expire; cards will contain two encrypted fingerprints and a unique personal identification number

Cutting it close. The Department of Defense will begin issuing HSPD-12 compliant ID cards, what it calls “Super CAC”, on 27 October, the department announced this week. In fact, DoD is ahead of many other departments in doing so, which is why we have so often over the past few months reported on companies that offer HSPD-12-related services. The new cards will issued over the next three as older cards expire and will contain two encrypted fingerprints and a unique personal identification number. They can be read by both swiping and RFID-enabled scanners. Information about what companies will provide the cards and enrollment services was not available, nor was the cost of the program.
