IATA calls for embedding RFIDs in luggage tags

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has approved the use of RFID technology in baggage handling, a move likely to pressure airlines to require that wireless chips be embedded in luggage tags to bolster air traffic security. In a meeting in Geneva last week the IATA approved a measure which would make RFID-based baggage systems a “recommended practice” for the organization’s member airlines — about 95 percent of the world’s commercial traffic. RFID figures in several large DHS programs, including US-VISIT and Secure Border Initiative.
