Smart Sensors Limitedrecently announced that its iris recognition platform was now available for Android-based smart phones.

Planet Biometricsreports thatthe firm’s MIRLIN Iris Recognition SDK has been translated to Android phones via a Java Native interface for user input, so app designers can easily create iris recognition apps.

Smart Sensors believes that its latest technology can be applied to law enforcement agencies as Android smartphones are relatively cheap and increasingly ubiquitous. The firm is already working in conjunction with various companies to develop multi-faceted biometric applications.

Additionally, Martin George, the CEO of Smart Sensors, believes the new Android capabilities can help add a secure layer of authentication to remotely hosted cloud computing resources.

“With corporate customers increasingly using Smart Phones as a remote access terminal to valuable data and communications channels that need to be kept private only to authorized users, there is a whole new exciting area of business opening up to biometrics,” George said. “Iris is an ideal solution because it is non-contact, and requires only a suitable digital photograph of the user’s eye.”
