In an effort to bolster its emergency response capabilities Union University in Tennessee recently installed an enhanced 911 system.

The Jackson Sun reportsthat the university is the first in Madison County to install the sophisticated new 911 system.

“It’s a huge step forward for emergency response,” said Carson Hawkins, Union’s director of safety and security, in an interview with the Sun. “It’s something that’s huge for Union.”

According to Hawkins, the new system has GPS capabilities so emergency responders can now know the exact latitude and longitude coordinates for where a 911 call was made. Hawkins said this will help reduce response times as emergency personnel can head to a location without needing to be directed by the Safety and Security Department.

“When you call 911 on most campuses, you would get the university’s main address,” Hawkins explained. “It’s not pinpointed. Safety and Security won’t be able to communicate with the ambulance and police the whole time with a regular security system. It’s a huge step forward for emergency response.”
