Purchase of interoperability and data-sharing firm a sign that FSC is moving whole-heartedly into the security business; company already known for its E-ONE fire apparatus

Oak Brook, Illinois-based Federal Signal Corporation (FSC), manufacturer of such diverse products as Bronto aerial devices, Elgin and Ravo street sweepers, and the E-ONE fire truck apparatus (the city of Montreal recently bought $47 million worth), has succesfully purchased Birmingham, Michigan-based Codespear for $17 million. Codespear is a privately held developer of specialized software used for a number of emergency responder applications, including interoperability, alert notification, and cross-agency collaboration for municipal, county, state and federal governments. The acquisition is seen as a major boost to FSC’s expanding suite of integrated security and well-being solutions. “We consider this acquisition to be an important next step in transforming from a diversified industrial conglomerate into a corporation focused on providing integrated solutions that enhance security and well-being,” said FSC CEO Robert D. Welding.

Following the acquisition, Codespear will become part of Federal Signal’s Safety Products Group, which has been renamed Federal Signal Safety and Security Systems Group.
