Danish Biometrics to develop log-on system for Copenhagen hospitals

Published 5 September 2006

Largest biometric project in Danish history; no decision yet on whether to adopt iris-scanning or fingerprint biometrics

If there ever were a sector that demanded biometrics, it is the health care industry. There you have the perfect confluence of the demand for speedy, accurate identification and the demand for strict privacy. One does not want anyone other than a doctor or a nurse accessing sensitive medical records, and it had better be a real medical professional and not an imposter doing so. Privacy laws in Europe as strict as the health care systems are good, and hospitals are just now catching up with the latest biometrics has to offer. Copenhagen Hospital Corporation is the latest in the game, having signed with Danish Biometrics to develop secure log-on procedures for the company’s Eletronic Patient Records system. No decision has been made whether to rely on iris-scanning or fingerprints, but as important medical decisison will hinge themselves on the outcome, speed will be a critical criterion.

The project is the largest Danish biometrics endeavor to date.
