The Security Industry Association (SIA) is gearing up to hold its annual Government Summit conference in Washington, D.C. once again.

Each year the two day event brings prominent security professionals, business leaders, and policy makers together to discuss the latest federal and state trends as well as the latest legislation and regulations that affect the security industry.

In particular, this year’s event will feature several panel discussions that address key emerging trends in the security industry like the role of the chief privacy officer (CPO), the effect of Executive Order 13514 which mandates that agencies purchase “environmentally responsible products and technologies,” and the proposed DHS budget for fiscal year 2012.

More specifically, the panel on privacy, titled “The Role of the Chief Privacy Officer and the SIA Privacy Framework,” will address existing misconceptions about privacy and security. The discussion will also cover the role of CPOs in federal agencies especially in balancing the protection of personal information against emerging technologies.

In reference to the panel, Don Erickson, SIA’s director of government relations, said, “Privacy matters. Our industry is impacted daily by concerns over the use of personally identifiable information. Much can be learned about the critical role performed by Chief Privacy Officers and the impact their work may have on the deployment of security technologies. This session will help do just that.”

The event’s headliners are Bill Kristol, the founder and editor the Weekly Standard and the chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle, and Bill Press, the current host of “The Bill Press Show” and the former chair of the California Democratic Party. The two will debate one another on a wide range of issues including the impact of the 2010 mid-term elections, the 2012 presidential campaign, as well as policy matters.

Other featured speakers include Scott Broyles, the CEO of Safe Skies Alliance, Ralph Basham, the founder of Command Consulting Group, Steven Calvery, the director of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, and Dr. Thomas Cellucci, chief commercialization officer at DHS.

In addition experts from federal agencies and congressional offices will provide valuable information on the latest developments in HSPD-12, aviation security, biometrics, the Federal Cloud Computing Initiative, and homeland security funding.

More than fifty companies will also be present to showcase their latest products or services including ADT Security Services, Honeywell Security Group, and Oberthur Technologies.

The conference will be held on 21 June to 22 June at the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

SIA is the leading industry group for businesses in electronic and physical security. The group lobbies Capitol Hill for pro-industry policies, provides education and training, and helps create open industry standards.
