Traditional disaster recovery programs tend to be complex and their implementation demanding; new solution aims to simplify and automate many disaster recovery-related functions

Palo Alto, California-based VMware is showing its VMware Site Recovery Manager, a new disaster recovery automation product. The new product will be welcomed: To survive, organizations need an effective disaster recovery, but recovery from site failures remains one of the most difficult and demanding aspects of IT. Traditional disaster recovery solutions typically involve many manual and complex steps, are difficult to test, and require expensive duplication of the production data center infrastructure to ensure reliable recovery. This complexity deteres many organizations from adpoting these solutuons, and, even if they are adopted, they are more likely than not to fail the first time they are called upon to deliver. VMware Site Recovery Manager claims that its contribution to diaster recovery is to simplify and automate the disaster recovery process so that customers can reliably recover from data center outages in hours rather than days.

Mark Bowker, analyst for Milford, Massachusetts-based Enterprise Strategy Group, says that “Growing awareness of the business consequences of data center outages and regulations including SOX and HIPAA that mandate disaster recovery are helping to raise awareness of the importance and preparation required to ensure successful recovery. Server virtualization solutions are actually enabling faster and more reliable disaster recovery. VMware Site Recovery Manager provides an effective way to simplify and automate disaster recovery in order to rapidly restore business operations when disasters occur.”
