Airport security by the numbers

In its 2011 budget request, DHS has asked for $214.7 million to buy and install 500 whole-body scanners; 75 percent of high-risk airports and 60 percent of second-tier airports will have body scanners deployed by the end of 2011

In its $56.3 billion fiscal year 2011 budget request, DHS. asked for:

  • $214.7 million to buy and install 500 advanced imaging technology (A.I.T.) screening machines
    • 75 percent of high-risk airports will get new body scanning technology
    • 60 percent of second-tier airports will receive whole-body scanners
  • $218.9 million for personnel to operate additional A.I.T.s at airport checkpoints
  • $85 million for additional Federal Air Marshals
  • $60 million to buy 800 portable explosive trace detection and associated checkpoint consumables
  • $71 million to fund an additional 275 proprietary explosives detection canine teams
  • $20 million for 3,350 behavior detection officers
