AS&E receives $17.5 million service contract for ZBVs

The U.S. government has bought several ZBVs — AS&E’s mobile backscatter X-ray scanning systems which may also be used in drive-by scanning — and the company receives a rich service and maintenance contract

Good news for Billerica, Massachusetts-based American Science and Engineering (NASDAQ: ASEI): The U.S. government has awarded it a $17.5 million contract to provide service and maintenance for several Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) X-ray Inspection Systems. AS&E was awarded the initial phase of the contract, valued at $11 million, in September of 2006; the latest award brings the total funded amount to $28.5 million with a potential value of up to $46.2 million. The contract provides the U.S. Government the option to exercise the remaining phases to May of 2009.

AS&E’s ZBV is a mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows first respnders to deploy a screening system where it is needed, and move it from place to place as required. Moreover, The system offers drive-by screening capability, which allows one or two operators to conduct non-intrusive X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects.
