A 20-year old Newtown, Connecticut man, whose was given as Adam Lanza, entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in town and began shooting.

Police says that, so far, there are twenty-seven dead and scores of injured. Among the dead are twenty students and six staff members. The police says that so far it appears that there is only one injured person requiring hospitalization.

Lanza’s mother Nancy was a teacher at the school, and she is among the dead. The police says that most of those killed were sitting in one classroom. It appears the gunman killed his mother at home before heading to school. He killed the school principal and school psychologist before entering one classroom and methodically shooting the kids sitting at their desks.

The New Jersey police took in the shooter’s 24-year old brother, Ryan, who lives in Hobhoken, for questioning.

The police is also holding in custody another person after he was detained in the woods near the school wearing camouflage pants, CBS reported.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade, ages 5 to 10.

It appears that the gunman went to the school principal’s office first and shot her and a few of her staff before heading to his mother’s classroom.

Newtown has a population about 27,000 and is located in northern Fairfield County, about forty-five miles southwest of Hartford and eighty miles northeast of New York City.

This would be the deadliest elementary school shooting in U.S. history, and among the deadliest school shooting. The worst U.S. high school shooting occurred in 1999 in Columbine when two of the school students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, killed twleve students and a teacher before turning their guns on themselves.

In 2007, thirty-two people were killed at Virginia Tech university.

In 1996 a gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Dunblane, Scotland, and killed sixteen children and an adult before killing himself.
