Institute launches certification program, and offers some unsettling numbers of threat prevalance in the U.S.

The security industry has traditionally been divided into two segments — physical security and information security. Earlier this year Novell and Honeywell announced an important cooperative agreement, signaling a fundamental change which has been taking place in the industry. McMurray, Pennsylvania-based Technolytics is an executive think tank following such developments, and in a recent release it says that, as aresult of this convergence, there is a growing need for professional certification programs. The institue is now offering a certification program which addresses both the physical and information security components. Technolytics also provided some interesting facts by way of background:

* In the past ten years the market for security systems has doubled to $28 billion

* Every 22.7 seconds one violent crime occurs in the United States

* Every 3.1 seconds one property crime occurs in the United States

* Every second, there are more than 1,850 significant security incidents reported

* Every three hours a new or modified virus is released

* Every day in 2006, U.S. CERT cataloged 30 new vulnerabilities

* In the last year intellectual property theft has increase over 300 percent

* The average dollar cost to a business per compromised customer recode is $185

* Corporate espionage has rocketed to be a $1.5 trillion problem worldwide

* Insiders have emerged as the number one physical and information security threat

For savvy investors, these numbes mean ine thing: Investment and business opportunities as far as the eyes can see.
