In the ongoing battle between law enforcement officials and hackers, authorities announced on Tuesday that they had arrested leading members of the hacktivist group known as LulzSec after their leader allegedly turned them in.

The captures occurred around the world with two individuals arrested in England, two from Ireland, and one American. Fox News reports that the five suspected hackers will face charges in New York.

“This is devastating to the organization,” an FBI official told Fox News. “We’re chopping off the head of LulzSec.”

Hector Xavier Monsegur, the organization’s leader who goes by the handle “Sabu,” was reportedly apprehended last June and is believed to have been working with the FBI for months to arrest LulzSec’s top hackers.

According to a source close to Sabu, “They caught him and he was secretly arrested and now works for the FBI.”

LulzSec has taken credit for infiltrating the networks of several high-profile organizations including the CIA, Sony, the U.K.’s Serious Organized Crime Agency, Strattfor Security Intelligence, eBay, and PayPal.

Sabu has been charged with twelve criminal accounts of conspiracy to engage in computer hacking and other crimes to which he pleaded guilty.
