The New York police said that a package containing an explosive device has been found in a mailbox outside the New York residence of billionaire financier George Soros. Soros, a Hungary-born billionaire, has become one of the world’s biggest funder of politically and socially liberal groups and causes. He has become a hate figure for right-wing movements in the United States and eastern Europe, and the target of a hostile, even anti-Semitic media and political campaign by the nationalist government of Victor Orban in his native Hungary.

The New York police said that a package containing an explosive device has been found in a mailbox outside the New York residence of billionaire financier George Soros.

Soros, a Hungary-born billionaire, has become one of the world’s biggest funder of politically and socially liberal groups and causes. He has become a hate figure for right-wing movements in the United States and eastern Europe, and the target of a hostile, anti-Semitic media and political campaign by the nationalist government of Victor Orban in his native Hungary.

Roseanne Barr called him a Nazi in an infamous tweetstorm, and just this month, Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), falsely claimed that Soros had funded a caravan of migrants moving north toward Mexico.

President Donald Trump, in two recent campaign rallies, repeated Gaetz’s lie about the migrants being “paid” – but rather than accusing Soros of paying them, Trump falsely charged that sources close to the Democrats were paying the migrants.

CNN reports that an employee at the home in Katonah, New York, a hamlet in the upscale town of Bedford in northern Westchester County, opened the package on Monday, revealing what appeared to be an explosive device. Soros was not home at the time, the New York Times reported.

The police at the Town of Bedford was contacted near 4:00 p.m. Monday, and bomb squad technicians detonated the package in a nearby wooded area.

The FBI’s New York field office said on Twitter that it was “conducting an investigation at and around a residence in Bedford, NY. There is no threat to public safety, and we have no further comment at this time.”
