Florida selects multi-threat detection system from MSA Detection Systems

Thirty Florida counties will have greater protection from hazardous materials using MSA’s Safesite Multi-Threat Detection System

The state of Florida has taken its time but finally selected Pittsburgh-based MSA Detection Systems to supply a line of hazard detection systems to the state for use in homeland security and HazMat response. The contract marks the largest order to date for MSA’s Safesite Multi-Threat Detection System, a wireless system which monitors perimeters at public events, as well as mass transit systems, shipping ports, and other facilities that could be the target of a terrorist incident. The system detects and communicates the existence of up to six potential hazards: chemical warfare agents, gamma radiation, toxic industrial chemicals, volatile organic compounds, combustible gases, and oxygen deficiency and enrichment. The three-year old MSA system has already been used in several high-profile events: the Kentucky Derby, the annual New Year’s Eve celebration in New York’s Times Square, the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. The state will deploy the systems in thirty counties across the state, including major metropolitan areas such as Orlando, Jacksonville, and Miami-Dade.

As part of the effort, Florida also plans to deploy several Sirius handheld multigas detectors from MSA to first responder personnel to use in emergencies. The detectors can communicate wirelessly with the Safesite system.
