GD leads a team of IT heavyweights to build a nationwide interoperable wireless network linking the Justice, Homeland Security, and Treasury departments

Good news for the C4 Systems unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD): It has won one of the plum homeland security contracts. The contract is for building a new nationwide, interoperable wireless network linking the Justice, Homeland Security, and Treasury departments as part of the Integrated Wireless Network (IWN) program. The IWN program is expected to be a $5 billion effort over fifteen years, with all options exercised. The contract calls for the creation of a secure communications network which would allow more than 80,000 federal agents to transmit data and talk to each other throughout the United States and its territories.

The IWN program will provide a range of secure and reliable wireless communications services, including voice, data, and multimedia, to support federal law enforcement, homeland security, and first responder operations. IWN will also implement solutions to provide federal agency interoperability with appropriate links to state, local, and tribal public safety and homeland security entities.
