MobileTrace, developed with funding support from the Joint IED Defeat Organization, detects both explosives and narcotics

GE Homeland Protection, a business of GE Security, a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of General Electric (NYSE: GE) (we hope we got this right) unveiled MobileTrace, a trace detection instrument which enables simultaneous explosives and narcotics detection in a handheld device. MobileTrace also increases the range of explosives detectable from a single sample. The device is based on GE Security’s Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometry (ITMS) platform. Dennis Cooke, president of GE Security’s Homeland Protection business, said that MobileTrace “offers the military and law enforcement communities, as well as other first responders, a handheld solution that delivers faster and better results in the field.”

The new system is designed to interface with other systems through Ethernet or USB communication. MobileTrace was developed under contract to the U.S. Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) with funding support from the Joint IED Defeat Organization. TSWG is a national forum which identifies, prioritizes, and coordinates research and development requirements for combating terrorism. Under this effort, GE Security is also developing and testing hardened handheld and desktop detection instruments in severe environments often faced by military personnel.
