CTX 900s to be deployed at Dubai International Airport; Arab Middle East market is booming as states deal with economic growth and homegown terrorism; airport, one of the largest in region, is a prime business opportunity for the security-minded

The sun is starting to shine once again on General Electric. After all, the company manufactures a host of security products other than explosive trace detection “puffers,” and many of them are quite good, including the CTX 900 explosive screening system for luggage. Taking advantage of a booming homeland security market in the Arab Middle East — just last week we reported on Gemalto’s national ID card deal with Oman — GE yesterday announced a $9 million deal with the Emirate of Dubai’s civil aviation authority to deploy the machines at Dubai International Airport terminal three later this year. The deal was secured with the help of International Aeradio Emerites, GE Security’s local distributor and a subsidiary of the United Kingdom-based SERCO Group.

Investor and frequent fliers should take note: Dubai International Airport (DIA) is working hard to keep pace with the United Arab Emirates’s exploding finance, construction, and tourism sectors. In 2005, DIA welcomed 24.7 million passengers compared to 21.7 million in 2004, accounting for over 25 percent of all passenger and aircraft movement across the Middle East and Africa. The airport is currently undergoing a massive $4.1 billion expansion project which will make DIA the world’s first and largest facility designed uniquely for the A380, the new super jumbo.
