University of Buffalo researcher develops technology that would allow a user automatically to manipulate a computer through hand gestures

A top University at Buffalo scientist is receiving a grant from Hewlett-Packard to support his research into technology that would allow a user automatically to manipulate a computer through hand gestures. Venu Govindaraju, director of the University of Buffalo’s Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors, is receiving an Innovation Research Award from HP Labs.

UB was one of 200 universities from 28 countries which applied for the awards. HP selected 40 projects that will receive up to $100,000 each in financial support, though the exact amount of UB’s award was not released. Govindaraju hopes to design a program that will allow a computer automatically to recognize a user’s gestures so that the user can manipulate virtual objects on the computer monitor, according to an HP summary of the project.
