HID Global acquires Integrated Engineering

Company looks to beef up its MIFARE business with its second purchase in two years; HID says it plans to bid for other smart card companies in the future

Those in the smart card business should pay close attention to this company. It was earlier this month that Irvine, California-based HID Global’s Kathleen Carroll treated us to an extensive analysis of pending RFID-related laws on the state level. That was appreciated, but now we hear the company — itself owned by Assa Abloy, we hasten to point out — has done something for itself: it announced last week that it had acquired Amsterdam-based Integrated Engineering (IE), a company whose efforts in the smart card market we have previously reported on. According to HID, the purchase is intended to shore up its engineering and management teams, as well to take advantage of IE’s flexible platform for MIFARE-based readers, a sector in which HID sees great potential. The purchase is HID’s first since acquiring Fargo Electronics in 2006, but the company is certain it will not be its last. “We are looking to supplement strong organic growth with acquisitions,” said HID’s William West. “Going forward, acquisitions will be concentrated on technology and things that help us build the business to where it should be, rather than where the industry has been historically.”
