How to conduct corporate business continuity tests I

Published 15 March 2006

If you are interested in becoming a business continuity executive, how do you? Business continuity consultants have no paper qualifications, and there is no formal degree in business continuity management yet. This is a problem for someone who wants to become a business continuity professional, but it is also a problem for businesses who want to hire one. Allen Johnson, a consultant with Guildford, U.K.-based Scenaris, says that under these circumstances, choosing a consultant is often a matter of trust and hope. One way to discover early on whether these trusts and hopes were misplaced or not is to remember that the end objective of the business continuity consulting project has to be to conduct a successful test. This is a good idea anyway because contingency plans count for little if they are untested. Johnson explains the issues involved in testing, and highlight a real-life case showing how to get it wrong.
