On Wednesday, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency announced that it would audit 1,000 U.S. employers in critical food, energy, and infrastructure industries.

ICE did not specify which businesses would be targeted, but did say that immigration agents would focus on seventeen sectors including agriculture, financial services, nuclear reactors, water treatment, and health care.

In a statement, the agency said, “The inspections will touch on employers of all sizes and in every state in the nation, with an emphasis on businesses related to critical infrastructure and key resources.”

The latest audits come as part of President Obama’s broader crackdown on employers who knowingly hire illegal workers.

In these audits, ICE inspectors pour through a company’s I-9 forms to see if there are any discrepancies. If a company is found to employ undocumented workers, they could face financial penalties.

Earlier this year, in a high profile case, Chipotle Mexican Grill, a popular burrito chain, was audited and penalized for hiring undocumented workers.
